Pray for blood
Pray for the cleansing
Pray for the flood
Pray for the end of this nightmare
This lie of a life can as quickly as it came dissolve
We seek only reprieve and welcome the darkness
The myth of a meaning so lost and forgotten
Take hold of my hand
For you are no longer alone
Walk with me in hell
Pray for solace
Pray for resolve
Pray for a savior
Pray for deliverance, some kind of purpose
A glimpse of a light in this void of existence
Now witness the end of an age
Hope dies in hands of believers
Who seek the truth in the liar's eye
Take hold of my hand
For you are no longer alone
Walk with me in hell
Walk with me in hell
Walk with me in hell
Walk with me in hell
Walk with me in hell
Walk with me in hell
Take hold of my hand
For you are no longer alone
Walk with me in hell
Walk with me in hell
Walk with me in hell
You're never alone
You're never alone
You're never alone
You're never alone
You're never alone
Walk with me in hell
- Lamb Of God (2006)
In the space of a few short years Lamb Of God went from obscurity in Richmond, VA to become one of the most important acts on the American metal scene. With their high level of musicianship coupled with Randy Blythe's pseudo-demonic voice, these guys quickly found favor. This particular song is interesting in that for the final take, the producer had Randy run 2 laps around the building where the recording studio was located, then come back in and record the song. That version, with Randy out of breath, is the version we hear on the album.
So many meanings can be taken from this song. This is truly one of those where it is left to the listener to figure out what it means to them. One can see a tormented man reaching out for help before something terrible happens. Another person could see one with Multiple Personality Disorder, and one dominant dark personality is entreating another more passive personality to aquiesce. Still one could go the social route and see one person trying to drag others down to their level. There are even political angles that could be attacked with this song. The possibilities are truly endless.
As for me, I go with option A. The person here is troubled and is reaching out to someone. When he finally finds someone he trusts, he lets them in... the journey through hell, as it were. The journey may be scary, but our hero has control over these demons and will keep his companion safe on the journey. The heaviness of the music adds to the weight of the journey that is about to be undertaken.
This song is my favorite Lamb Of God song and is on my list of all time favorite songs. It's a dark and heavy song with good open lyrics. I wonder what Mardi thinks.
Well, I'm off to charge my iPod.
I was really expecting worse. I don't think this song would ever make it to my most played list however I would listen to it willingly should it play.
ReplyDeleteAs for the meaning, I would have to agree it seems to be someone searching for help. Searching for someone else to take the journey with them. They are looking to open and share the experience. In this instance the journey may be hard and scary but the hero will make it through with their companion at their side.
Not too detailed but this is my theory. Again, I haven't been shocked. I can only imagine what is coming. Next.......
