Had Enough

Milk it for all it's worth.
Make sure you get them first.
The apple of your eye.
The rotten core inside.
We are all prisoners.
Things couldn't get much worse.
I've had it up to here, you know your end is near.

[Chorus:]You had to have it all,
Well have you had enough?
You greedy little bastard,
You will get what you deserve.
When all is said and done,
I will be the one to leave you in the misery and hate what you've become.

Intoxicated eyes, no longer live that life.
You should have learned by now, I'll burn this whole world down.
I need some peace of mind, no fear of what's behind.
You think you've won this fight, you've only lost your mind.

[Chorus:]You had to have it all,
Well have you had enough?
You greedy little bastard,
You will get what you deserve.
When all is said and done,
I will be the one to leave you in the misery and hate what you've become.
Hold me down (I will live again)
Pull me out (I will break it in)
Hold me down (better in the end)
Hold me down.

[Chorus]You had to have it all,
Well have you had enough?
You greedy little bastard,
You will get what you deserve.
When all is said and done,
I will be the one to leave you in the misery and hate what you've become.

Heaven help you.

Breaking Benjamin 2006

Breaking Benjamin was formed in 1998. The name came from an incident when the lead singer Benjamin Burnley was performing at a club doing a cover of a Nirvana song and kicked over a mic stand breaking it. The owner of the stand came up on stage and said "I'd like to thank Benjamin for breaking my fucking microphone". Thus the name Breaking Benjamin.

My interpretation of this song is probably very different than others. The message it sent to me came through very clear. I hear the voice in the song as one of someone feeling trapped, being controlled by someone else who only takes and does not give. Someone who is abusive in many ways. I think the singer in this song is finally at the point where they have decided enough is enough. The point where they have finally decided to walk away.

In an abusive relationship this can take a long time to get to and sometimes the person is pushed to the very edge where they feel like they are going to snap. The lyrics in this song say to the other person, you will get whats coming to you. I think in life we all have felt that way at some point. Someone has wronged us in some way and though we may be mad as hell we come to the reasoning that they will get what's coming to them we just have to sit back and watch it happen.

The song also is almost taunting. The opening line "Milk it for all its worth" it's almost as if the singer is saying come on do it again while you have the chance. Being abused by someone the person (I do not refer to people as victims as I believe we all the ability to take a stand, it just takes time to find your voice) gets to the point where you know it's coming and may even egg it on as a defense mechanism to show the abuser you are not afraid.

In the chorus our singer is asking if his "controller" so to speak has had enough, do they want more, and to let them know he is not going to take it much longer. When someone is finally breaking free of their abuser the same cycle may occur. A powerful feeling of freedom reigns over you and sometimes you are able to find words you never could before.

I really don't think this song was meant for this meaning when it was written but it is what I got out of it. Let's see what my better half has to say.

  1. While there are a few different situations to which one could apply the lyrics of this song, I think Mardi has hit it right on with the abuse angle. There are all kinds of abuse. Not just the physical or mental abuse, but the abuse of trust, abuse of priviledge, and power. There is always the abuser and the abused.

There always comes the point where something breaks and the abuser's world comes tumbling down. At some point the abused decides not to take it anymore. Anyone who has reached that point knows the feelings of desperation that build as is demonstrated in the lyrics. What happens is anyone's guess.

The musical structure adds a nice punch... the pounding rock beat throughout the song never let's up until the singer is resolved. The mellowness of the bridge shows the peace of mind felt at the moment of resolution. The rage of the singer at the end lets us know the moment has arrived.

    Good song, Mardi.
