Pull Me Under

Lost in the sky
Clouds roll by and I roll with them
Arrows fly
Seas increase and then fall again

This world is spinning around me
This world is spinning without me
Every day sends future to past
Every breath leaves me one less to my last

Watch the sparrow falling
Gives new meaning to it all
If not today nor yet tomorrow then some other day

I'll take seven lives for one
And then my only father's son
As sure as I did ever love him
I am not afraid

This world is spinning around me
The whole world keeps spinning around me
All life is future to past
Every breath leaves me one less to my last

Pull me under, pull me under
Pull me under, I'm not afraid
All that I feel is honor and spite
All I can do is set it right

Dust fills my eyes
Clouds roll by and I roll with them
Centuries cry
Others fly and I fall again

This world is spinning inside me
The whole world is spinning inside me
Every day sends future to past
Every step brings me closer to my last

Pull me under, pull me under
Pull me under, I'm not afraid
Living my life too much in the sun
Only until your will is done

Pull me under, pull me under
Pull me under, I'm not afraid
All that I feel is honor and spite
All I can do is set it right

Pull me under, pull me under
Pull me under, I'm not afraid
Living my life too much in the sun
Only until your will is done

Dream Theater 1992

This song has many nice guitar riffs in it. It is a very long song but I think the music makes it completely worth it.

You wouldn't expect it but this song actually takes lyrics from Hamlet. I think the song takes a look at the circle of life. It looks at life, death and the in between. If you really look at the lyrics you can see where it seems like the singer is feeling as if he is just rolling through life being pulled along. It doesn't seem like he feels like he has any control and is just giving in.

I can think of various times in my life when I have felt this way. I didn't want to fight for anything, I didn't want to look for anything, I just wanted to be and let life pull me through as it would. A feeling that the past is driving me, taking me where it sees fit.

I can assure myself that I am not seeing life this way any longer but I do still like this song. I think the music is cool, the meaning in the song is easy to relate to and its just a cool tune.

  1. I remember first hearing this song in late 1992. My roommate and I were waiting for someone and I flipped on the radio just as this song was starting. I thought the music was cool and was at the Sam Goody in Boise, ID about a week later (after a grueling wargame) looking for the CD. Honestly, I listened to the CD all the way through once... I hated it all except this one song.

Comparisons to Hamlet aside (the connection to which I find tenuous at best), the song feels to me an anthem of a journey into a place unknown. The phrase 'pull me under' can have as many connotations as a mind can imagine, but the most popular connotations are death and the downward spiral into the depths of the psyche. The theme here seems to me to say "fuck it, I'm going to die anyway, why should I be afraid of what is coming next?" Oversimplification? Yes it is, but to me it gets no deeper than that.

That said, I've never really thought about these lyrics on a deeper level than the quotes they provide. The lyrics in this song do tell of a wake-up call to the singer. Watching death gave him new perspective on life. Perhaps, if we could all take that perspective, there would be a lot less hell on earth.
